WHY WE ARE DIFFERENT - CrossFit is different than almost every other fitness system out there, but how? We claim to be forging “elite fitness” (and we are) but what does that mean in comparison to Spinning or Zumba? Why are we so much better (however more difficult) that anything you might get at Golds Gym or any other standard big box gym? Some of the training reasons that we are different is that we teach you how to move, we teach you skills that are transferable to other endeavors, we teach you how to take care of your nasty mobility business, we teach you about nutrition in a very pragmatic kind of way, and we teach you concepts that transcend the specific movement you are learning and carry over to nearly every other thing. These are all very basic and readily apparent is nearly any CrossFit facility in the world. There is more to our differences however.
WE CARE! From the standpoint of being concerned about our athletes (yes you are all athletes), we WANT you to learn and become better. We WANT you to best us and grow and grow to be the best athletes they can be. We THRIVE on your successes and would never limit the advancement of anyone. From the standpoint of being concerned about individuals, we care about your life. Between your family, your personal goals and you just being you, this is of great importance because no one can claim the right to Coach you if they don’t actively care and WANT to get to know you. If a CrossFit Coach does not care about you as a person first then they are no better than the squirmy kid at Curves who is training you just to have a job. Due to the open source model of CrossFit, it’s almost impossible to create an environment that would allow anything less can complete commitment and concern for those who care enough to walk in our door and take control of thier health, fitness and well-being.
We suffer too. In my experience I have seen trainers, of varying programs, who do none of the training that they happen to teach. They don’t follow the advice they give and look very unfit. As CrossFitters first, we actually suffer through the WODs with you. Hit personal best WITH you. We get totally obliterated right next to you. It’s an offense to me to see trainers who give horrid strength training advice only to spend 1 hour on the Elliptical or out running and do nothing else. You don’t have the right to be a Coach without caring and you don’t have the right to teach CrossFit if you don’t do it yourself!
This was a post that I couldn’t have agreed with more and have adapted to our box. This was originally posted by CrossFit Overcome.
